It is so hard to think it is February already, as we embark on week 6. After a brief period of hibernation to avoid the extreme cold, I am starting to feel alive again, and I am loving this week’s list.  There are some very special tracks on here. 

We open with 2024 UK AMA emerging artist of the year, Jonny Morgan who creates a “Safe Space” to start us off. Maybe it was the warmth of this song, or the metaphor of a safe space, that led me right into the safe hands of “Bear’s Den, with Dermot Kennedy“. 

Next, we take an anthemic turn, with Katherine Priddy’s rousing lament “Close Season”, in which she asks painfully, “whose bed does he sleep in?”. Katherine’s haunting lyrics and classic guitar work scream of a deep country influence, which is hard to ignore. Sticking with the Americana vibe I wonder if “Wanderlust” by Sarah Jane Scouten is the reason for Katherine’s weeping. 

Time for a subdued moment of reflection, with Heather Maloney. Take sanctuary in the peaceful quiet of the longer form, delicate and sagacious “Labyrinth in the Weeds“. 

Brace yourselves, because just when you think you are safe, enter Lucy Gallant challenging her inner Martha Wainwright, but delivering a truly unique bohemian, folk-pop, bubblegum romp about “Love”. Lucy is quickly followed by the freight-train of sound that is the Track Dogs. Their genre bending fusion of Folk, Latin, and Americana is driven hard on a powerful rhythm, it is very hard to resist. 

Time to go back to our trad roots for a rest I think…. Viv & Riley sit like a sorbet course in the middle of this list, reminding us we are in a safe place and like an old sofa, they allow us to settle back down into a sound we are familiar with. 

I have become a bit obsessed with the voice of Amelia Coburn recently, refreshing and unique, her intelligent, alluring lyrics and raw sound is a bit like putting on someone else’s coat at a party and realising you prefer it to your own…. 

There is another song on this list which I find completely intoxicating, the pure Nashville cordial that is Lucy Isabel. I have chosen “Miles From Home” for this list, but in truth I could chose anything from her formative and outstanding 2024 album “All the Life” – This really feels like an artist at the peak of her craft and love what she is doing.
