#30.2025 – Take a Moment To Reflect.
Still coming down after my amazing day at @folkbytheoak this weekend, but I have some amazing music to share with you.
The Folk My Life Playlist…
The Deep Blue, Holly & the Reivers, and of course Janice Burns and John Doran were all appearing on the acorn stage this year and delivered some very special performances. The Deep Blue even got a special mention, as Andrew Davie’s pick of the show during Bear’s Den’s headline set.
I have fallen completely in love with the sensitive and tender sound of Adam Kirkup, the sentiment in “the same sun going down” is something we could all take to the bank, so let this one sink in. It is followed in the 2nd spot by the unique sound of Hayden Roth, his mature songwriting and Dylanesque harmonica make Hayden my ‘one to watch’ this week.
Our Podcast episode this week is A great conversation with ‘A Different Thread’, and Robert mentioned Honey Magpie, so obviously I had to go off hunting… There sound is beautifully chilled, reassuring and calm.
I have also picked a beautiful song by Fisherman’s Friend guitarist Toby “Loveridge” Lobb whose solo work is just Devine. His chilling and haunting songwriting is a very special gift and is a peaceful Cornish sanctuary to hide in.
If you follow the list or my blog you will know I have a soft spot for Woody and the US Folk Revival, so you can guess why discovering “Jenny Again” was like being struck by lightning. This great artist draws a direct line to those early Folk Revival Roots, and I would love to know more about the inspirations and origins of these songs.
Continuing the Americana sound I have included the extraordinary Lorraine Nash, Multi-Instrumentalist form Ireland. Nash brings a healthy mix of country, blues and Americana into the folk space with her Irish Roots hard to hide.
Davey Jay has some outstanding music other, I have selected My Caroline as a bit of a gateway…
Lastly I want to mention the distinctive, spacious sound of Felicity Lawless, her sparkling Spanish style guitar and soaring strings blended with her effortless vocals is an intoxicating mix and I have found myself returning to her Karasu album regularly, maybe I should move on to her newer music… Hope you love the list this week.
